The Edinburgh and Scottish Collection at Central Library holds one of the largest collections of material about Edinburgh in the world including many rare or unique items. Our library staff can guide you through books, maps, directories, prints, photographs and a variety of ephemera to help you learn more about the city and its people.
The archive material can help you find out more about the history of your area or house you live in or show how the city has changed through the centuries. You can discover individuals and their families, how they lived and what they did and the history of civic buildings such as schools, churches, hospitals and shops.
Our Town Stories showcases the images and maps from Central Library’s heritage collections to tell these stories online. We’ve curated stories across a variety of themes and worked with partner organisations to show the many different aspects of Edinburgh’s history.
